Mushy Spuds

This simple and fun experiment uses a potato to demonstrate osmosis and why a potato gets mushy when placed in saltwater.


Materials: 1 large potato, 2 bowls, 2 tablespoons salt, and water


1. With help from an adult, slice the potato lengthwise into several pieces with two flat sides.

2. Fill both bowls of the way with water.

3. Add two tablespoons of salt to one of the dishes.

4. Put half of the potatoes in the freshwater and half in the saltwater.

5. Allow the potatoes to soak for 25 minutes.

6. Compare the potatoes and discuss any differences.

7. Explain why this happened.
