Brush Those Pearly Whites!

Your teeth are covered with a layer of enamel. This is one of the hardest parts of the body. A layer of bacteria called plaque builds up on your teeth every day. The bacteria can use sugar from your food to make acid that will attack your teeth causing them to decay. Some food and drink already contains this acid. Try this activity to see what acid can do to your teeth!

Materials:
a tooth that has fallen out (before you give it to the Tooth Fairy),
a cup of a carbonated beverage (coke works well)

Procedures:

1. Put a tooth into your carbonated drink

2. Let tooth sit for 24 hours

3. Look carefully at the tooth, touch it. How has it changed?

4. Do you see why it is important to brush your teeth after eating?
