Why does a potato get mushy when placed in salt water?

Submitted by Don Gentile's 4th grade science students at Lindsey Elementary

    1) The potato gets mushy because some of the water inside the potato cells is going into the saltwater, causing the cell wall to collapse.

    2) The potato gets mushy because the saltwater is taking the air out of the potato cells

   3) The potato gets mushy because the saltwater is rubbing against it and scraping the surface.
