Background Information

  • Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
  • Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a membrane. (see diagram below)
  • Equilibrium is when two or more things are balanced or equal.
  • Turgor pressure is the pressure that is pushing on the inside of a cell wall. The pressure comes from water and other substances that are inside the cell.
  • Potatoes have about 1-2% salt in their cells.
  • Interesting fact: Saltwater fish have an internal pump that brings in water, so they do not dehydrate. The water in the fish’s cells (high water concentration, low salt), naturally wants to move into the ocean water (low water concentration, high salt).

Cool Activities

Evening Things Out
For a better understanding of diffusion, follow these simple steps.

Mushy Spuds

This simple and fun experiment uses a potato to demonstrate osmosis and why a potato gets mushy when placed in saltwater.
