How we got started
The Dr. James H. Porter Center for Science and
Mathematics was started in 1991 as a project of
the Lake County Superintendents’ Association,
under the direction of Lake County
Superintendent Dr. James H. Porter. Dr. Porter
pulled together a team of community leaders who
created the vision and the start-up of the
Porter Center. The Center was originally named
the Lakeland Area Center for Science and Math
and, at its onset, provided hands-on science
experiences for all Lake and Geauga third grade
students. In 1992, a fourth grade program was
added and by the end of 1994, all fifth graders
were participating in Science Center activities
at The Holden Arboretum and Lake Metro Parks
FarmPark. In 1997, upon Dr. Porter’s retirement,
the Center’s name was changed to reflect his
dedication to local science education. The
Porter Center was housed at the Auburn Career
Center until the 2008-2009 school year. The
space was provided as a generous in-kind
contribution from Auburn Career Center.
